What Engineers Want: Life Quality Insights from Sweden & Norway

Data reveals what matters most to experienced Engineers in Sweden & Norway, uncovering both cultural and strategic nuances in their priorities – potentially affecting salaries.

Competence feeds competence

The Engineering & Construction industry is always growing and evolving. But for the Engineers themselves, one preference is emerging as a clear front-runner for driving personal & professional development: competence sharing.

Our data indicates that what Engineers want most is to keep learning and growing. They gravitate towards environments where valuable learning experiences stem from discussions and collaborations with peers.

What Engineers want is shaping the future of the industry

As we look ahead, the trend of knowledge sharing is set to redefine the landscape of Engineering & Construction in Sweden & Norway. Organizations that encourage a culture of collaboration will not only enhance their employees’ skillsets, but will also create an environment that attracts top talent.

Moreover, as the demand for skilled Engineers continues to rise, we can speculate that those who are adept at sharing knowledge will find themselves in higher demand. The ability to teach and learn from one another is becoming an essential skill in a competitive job market. Rather than listing every finding, below are a few illustrative categories to show how certain skill types tend to influence salaries:

Learning over leading

For both Swedish and Norwegian Engineers, the hunger for growth is clear — but it’s not about climbing the ladder.

In both markets, competence sharing tops the list (18.16% SE, 17.07% NO), followed closely by technical specialization in Norway (16.26%) and cross-competence learning in Sweden (17.85%).

Interestingly, management ambitions rank far lower (6.99% SE, 11.06% NO), indicating that today’s senior professionals prioritize mastering their craft and expanding their skillsets over pursuing titles.

Autonomy vs. Flexibility

While both countries value flexible hours, Norwegian engineers show a stronger preference for autonomy (22.94%), suggesting a greater need for independence in their work.

Swedes, however, place slightly more emphasis on decision influence (18.17%) and employment security (12.62%) — possibly reflecting differences in corporate culture and job market dynamics.

Cash is still king, but with local twists

Unsurprisingly, salary increase is the top priority in both countries — but Norwegian professionals weigh this significantly higher (49.31%) compared to their Swedish peers (38.86%).

Swedes show a more balanced interest in vacation (15.87%) and wellness programs (10.44%), hinting at a broader view of total compensation that includes quality of life and well-being.

Preferencs & Pay – what Engineers want vs. their earning potential

While knowledge sharing is a favorite development tool, it raises an interesting question: how do preferences influence salaries? If preferences shape offers, culture, and long-term strategy, will certain preferences lead to higher pay?
